Event Theme Design for Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente has a mission to provide high-quality, affordable healthcare services and to improve the health of its members and the communities they serve. It was a pleasure to work with them on a multi-year event theme design exploration for their NEID conference. Working on creative for an event that profoundly touched many people was a meaningful experience.

Project overview

A multi-year evolution

In 2017, Kaiser Permanente launched the beginning of a three-year theme for their National Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity (NEID) Conference. Their team contacted CGI Interactive the following year to evolve the event theme design.

Year one was titled #Become and featured overlapping color circles that represented people from different backgrounds, ethnicities, skills, and interests coming together, with no single idea or person obscuring another.

2018 #Belong

As we stepped up to evolve the event theme design, we moved into #Belong. The client provided a great quote to get the ball rolling:

“It’s been said that diversity is like being invited to a party, inclusion is being asked to dance, and belonging is dancing like no one’s watching.”

Our team came up with the idea of using quarter circles to show that we make up something greater than ourselves if we promote inclusion and diversity.

This approach also shows that together, we can make a beautiful pattern of colors and shapes. We slightly adjusted the color palette for the event theme design to include some brighter tones to create a stronger feeling of celebration and joy.

We created a sense of coming together by always having shapes on the edges appear like they are in the process of being included in the group. Inclusion and diversity are things to work on continually, and this approach knits well with that notion of diligence.

2019 #Beyond

The next stage in the evolution of the event theme design focused on taking all of the work of the previous two years and moving forward together — beyond the walls of the business — to look for more ways to promote diversity and inclusion.

To bring this to life, we leveraged the pattern we created for #Belong and put it along a winding path. We intentionally used a path that is not straight to reinforce that the path may twist and turn, but in the end, we are all in this together.

Event branding

We created an event theme design that lasted three years. The graphics were used across presentations, banners, and onsite event graphics.

We designed and animated lower thirds and a short video that shared the evolution of the event visuals and message over three years.

Our team designed a PowerPoint template with slide layouts for the Kaiser Permanente teams to use when crafting their presentations.
